Answers to the questions families ask us most.
What is online tutoring, and how does a session work?
Online tutoring recreates in-person tutoring with more flexibility. Your child meets a tutor over video on a shared interactive whiteboard. The tutor writes out math, demonstrates concepts, or marks up an essay, and your child sees it in real time and writes back the same way. The tutor sees exactly when something clicks or needs another pass.
What makes Success Tutoring Online different from other services?
Many online services are self-serve, with no one to call and a rotating cast of tutors. We are the opposite. Your child gets one matched educator, live and one-on-one, plus a real team you can reach by phone or email. After 25 years, that personal approach is still what families tell us they value most.
How are tutors matched with students?
Matching is the hallmark of what we do. Using what you share about your child’s academic standing and needs, their goals, how they learn, and their schedule, we identify the tutor or tutors best suited to them. The right fit is what makes the rest of the tutoring work.
Will my child work with the same tutor each time?
Yes. We keep your child with one educator, so the tutor learns how your child thinks and your child builds a real relationship. That consistency is a big part of why students relax, open up, and make steady progress.
Who are the tutors at Success Tutoring Online?
Our tutors are mainly current and retired teachers, college and post-graduate students who excelled in the subjects they teach and have tutored others, and working professionals and subject experts in science, math, and the language arts. They bring real teaching experience, not just knowledge of the material.
What are your tutors’ credentials?
Every tutor has years of experience teaching others, in a classroom or one-on-one, and many are credentialed teachers. Before anyone works with a student, our vetting process confirms their qualifications, and all tutors are reviewed and assessed at regular intervals.
How effective is online tutoring?
Live one-on-one online tutoring is on par with in-person tutoring for creating a rich learning experience, and it adds real benefits: convenience, flexibility, affordability, and a comfortable place to learn. Sessions fit into a busy family’s routine instead of disrupting it.
How many hours will my child need?
It depends on how your child is doing now and what they want to accomplish. Regular weekly tutoring is the usual path to steady progress, from one hour a week to several. The right amount comes down to their mastery of the subject and their goal, and we adjust as they improve.
Can I be involved in or monitor my child’s sessions?
Yes. You are welcome to sit in the same room or connect to the whiteboard from another location. You can also reach an online administrator by phone or email any time for an update on how your child is doing and what to work on next.
What equipment do we need to get started?
A desktop or laptop with a webcam and microphone, plus a fast, reliable internet connection. Any newer computer with an up-to-date version of Windows or macOS and a current web browser will work. Headphones with a microphone improve the audio. We do not recommend phones or tablets, since the small screen makes the whiteboard hard to use.
How much does it cost?
You can pay per session or buy a block of hours at a discounted rate, with no long contract. The total depends on how many hours your child needs. See current options on our Pricing page, or contact us and we will recommend a plan that fits.
Do you work with families outside Burbank?
Yes. We are rooted in Burbank and the greater Los Angeles area, but every session is online, so we teach students throughout the United States, with the same patient, one-on-one instruction wherever your family is.
